The Smithtown Children’s Foundation originally formed in 2008 to help Kaylee Rivers, a kindergartner diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. We realized as we pooled our resources, that we were building something to help the entire community. Even though Kaylee has since passed away, her courage inspired us to help others in crisis. To date, we have assisted families paying medical bills & medical equipment, overdue mortgages & other household bills, sent children to camp/preschool, & we have even purchased cars for a single mom forced into a shelter and an emancipated minor. No one wants to be the family requiring our assistance. Unfortunately this cannot always be helped & when we do help, these families appreciate the care & consideration afforded them by the foundation & the community. The Smithtown Children’s Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization and we are 100% volunteer.
We hold several signature fundraisers throughout the year which allow us to be an immediate resource to families in need. These events include the Friends Fore the Smithtown Community Golf Outing, the Annual Holiday Breakfast/Boutique hosted by Maureen’s Kitchen, and the Kisses for Kaylee Memorial Dinner/Dance, and Mike’s Hike 4K. We work in conjunction with the school district social workers providing backpacks/school supplies, thanksgiving baskets, and holiday gift cards to needy families under their care. And finally, we manage $8000 in college scholarships for graduating seniors from both SHSs East/West attending a four year college for nursing, science, teaching, small business, culinary/hospitality & a needs based scholarship, all in memory of loved ones lost.
As the word spreads of our mission, we have had student clubs such as DECA, the Smithtown Industry Association Board, the Smithtown Teacher Association & the Senior Resources of LI fundraise for us. We’ve even had students from Great Hollow host a teen Karaoke. Mercedes Benz of Smithtown held a networking night for us right in their showroom! Most recently, we have partnered with the Saf-T-Swim and the LI Drowning Prevention Task Force to help keep kids safer in, on, and around water.
As our mission statement suggests, we need community involvement to be successful. YOUR SUPPORT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR FAMILIES IN OUR OWN BACKYARD! Civic minded companies and dedicated individuals who donate time, money, products and services will allow us to help local families cope with mounting medical (or other) bills in their time of crisis.
